Supreme Lobster Appetizers


Supreme Lobster AppetizerHad an occasion to need appetizers this week, but didn’t have time to make them.  A local Chicago company, Supreme Lobster and Seafood, sells quality heat and eat appys to bail you out of just such a jam.

Picked up their bacon wrapped scallops and their lobster rangoon won tons. Both could be ready in less than 20 minutes in a conventional oven.

Sometimes with ‘bacon wrapped’ items, it seems like the bacon seldom gets to a satisfactory “done stage,” but such was not the case with the Supreme product.  Although these weren’t ‘bay scallops,’  they also weren’t full size sea scallops; they may have been the latter cut into manageable portions. In any case, the bites had a great flavor.

As did the lobster rangoon won tons, a dollop of lobster ‘salad’ (with cream cheese) inside a crispy won ton, and yes, the pastries do puff up and get nice and crispy.

For these type of appetizers in the frozen food section of your grocery, expect to pay in the range of $1 per appetizer, which is competitive with any brand.

DeLish Hot Dog Puffs(Good &) deLish is one of Walgreen’s food brands, along with Nice!  and a couple others.  They have a lot of heat and eat foods in their coolers these days, including burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and appetizers.  I’ve tried the burgers and the pizza.

These hot dog puffs come in a pack of 8 for $2.50 6.4 ounces), on the shelf next to them were boneless wings and spanakopita.  The selling points on the package here are “no preservatives, artificial colors, flavors or high fructose corn syrup.”

They are further advertised as “uncured beef mini franks wrapped in a flaky butter puff pastry.”

Ingredient list:  Puff Pastry , (Enriched Unbleached Wheat Flour , (Wheat Flour , Malted Barley Flour , Niacin , Reduced Iron , Thiamin Mononitrate , Riboflavin , Folic Acid) , Butter (Pasteurized Cream) , (Beef , Beef , water , Contains Less Than 2% of the Following , Contains Less Than 2% of the Following) , (Allspice , Celery Juice Powder , Evaporated Cane Syrup , Garlic Powder , Ginger , Honey , Lactic Acid Starter Culture (Not from dairy) , Mustard , Nutmeg , Onion Powder , Paprika , Pepper , Sea Salt).

Celery juice is the “new MSG” doncha know?   Wish they didn’t have cane syrup and honey in them, but oh well.

deLish hot dog pubbsInstructions call for 18-20 minutes in a pre-heated 375 oven.  After 18 minutes, they were only at the soggy dough factor. (Left).  So I tried for another ten minutes (28 total).   Then another five minutes.  I’ve heard of “your results may vary,” but this seems a little extreme!  After 32 minutes they had (sort of) crisped up and were showing signs of their advertised “flaky pastry.”  But they certainly don’t look like the ones on the package but that’a a curse of our society in general, things are just not like they are advertised (including people).  *Yes, my  $7000 oven is calibrated).

Fortunately I had made a couple of gallons of chicken and dumplings today, so I wasn’t going to starve.

I waited a few minutes before sampling to see if that mattered.   It didn’t.  The franks have good flavor, but the ‘blankets’ never got crispy.   So I’ve tried ’em, won’t buy them again.

BTW, you know a frozen pasty that really rocks?  Try Trader Joe’s Chocolate Croissants. Really.

According to the USDA establishment number on the package ( 31924), these babies are made for Walgreens by Pegasus Foods of Los Angeles. Pegasus says they make premium ethnic, Mediterranean, and gourmet food of different ilks. They apparently do a large contract manufacturing business, in addition to Walgreens, they work for Cinnabon and Melrose Kitchen.

They started in 1998 as a contract manufacturer specializing in filo dough products.

Home Cookin’ – Louisa Toasted Ravioli


Louisa's Beef Toasted RavioliIf you ever visit St. Louis, MO, locals will encourage you to spend some time on the “Hill” one of the local ethnic neighborhoods that remains relatively intact and true to its roots.   In the early days, the “Hill“, so named because it is the highest point in St. Louis, was home to clay mines, and immigrant Italians settled in the area in the 1890s – mostly as workers in the mines.

Shops and restaurants opened to cater to the Italians, and the “Hill” remains an oasis of Italian focused eateries to this day.

Specific to the area is one popular dish, which may have originated there – toasted ravioli.  Ravioli pasta is stuffed with meat or cheese, and deep fried until crispy.

Louisa Foods, of St. Louis, has elevated the status of toasted ravioli, by making it available as a frozen “heat and eat” dish available to the home consumer.

The people of Louisa have mastered the creation of a crispy ‘eat at home’ product that actually DOES crisp up in the oven.    When you think about all the frozen products you have tried for the home, that promise ‘crispness’, you will be aware of what a great feat Louisa has achieved.

The pillows of pasta are stuffed with seasoned minced beef, and come out of the oven piping hot and crispy in the right places, chewy in the center, just as you would find in a local St. Louis eatery.  I AM impressed!

Mrs. Burgerdogboy heated some as part of an appetizer dinner last nite, and served them with a side of marinara and shaved Parmesan (not included), and the package easily serves 4-6 on an appetizer basis, and for the 2 of us, would have been more than enough for a meal, all by their lonesome.

I always enjoy partaking in regional specialties, and when you find manufacturers that are successfully able to take a regional dish and make it available to the world, well, that’s a treat.
