My family used to go skiing most weekends during Minnesota winters; one of our most frequent stops was a little place called Mount Ashwabay, near Bayfield, Wisconsin, the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Park. If we took the ‘back road’ (Wisconsin highway 13, which meandered along the south shore of Lake Superior, occasionally we’d stop on the way home at a little place in Port Wing, Wisconsin for a nosh.
A little closer to Bayfield is the burg of Cornucopia, Wisconsin, home of the Village Inn. Serving a full menu, three meals, the VI buys and supports local ranchers and farmers.
Kawika and Minnesota’s favorite entertainer Todd Eckart, took a mental health day, drove down to Cornucopia, and had a relaxing meal lake side.
Sampled were the Kim Chee burger, with locally made (!?!?) kim chee from nearby Spirit Creek Farms, who specialize in fermented vegetables. The burger is locally raised grass fed Galloway beef , available in local stores, topped with the kim chee, lettuce and tomato. Served with house-made chips on the side.
Local fresh whitefish can be served broiled or fried, with house-made soup or salad, and a choice of starch.
The menu is full of interesting twists on local favorite. Looks like a fun place, and some great grub.
To get to the Village Inn from Duluth, head East on US Highway 2 through Superior, take the Wisconsin 13 (South) exit, and motor out 49 miles to Corncucopia.
